Share and Share Alike—Incorporating Social Media into Email Marketing

February 02, 2011

Sharing has become an important word in today’s world, where an effective social media strategy has the potential of giving a company more visibility than a 30-second spot during the Superbowl. But companies who primarily operate their marketing via more “traditional” methods like email newsletters (who’d have ever though the day would come when email marketing had become a traditional method?) can take steps to incorporate social networking tools into their current efforts.

How? By including a “share” option for the articles contained in your e-newsletters that will allow your subscribers to share with their online circle via the top social networks. The effect could lead to rapid growth of your mailing list.

This sounds simple enough. But believe it or not, a recent study showed that an overwhelming majority of companies who operate email marketing campaigns don’t do this. Considering that an email marketing campaign is generally an indication of a company that's well ahead of the curve insofar as new and alternative marketing methods are concerned, this tidbit of information is shocking.

But here’s the good news. You don’t have to lump yourself in with their numbers. By refusing to do so, and by embracing a social media marketing campaign that incorporates your existing email marketing strategy, you’re effectively taking the upper hand over many much larger and more influential companies. Have a go at it.
