Questions When Choosing Online Survey Software

May 11, 2011

Like anything that has to do with your website, choosing online survey software requires some intensive research. Most people have seen websites that simply throw a survey up. Some of them don’t work, some are outdated, and some are just plain unprofessional looking.

However, if you are looking to online marketing surveys to return real data that can be used, you need to choose the right online survey software for your needs.

Cost is generally a major factor when it comes to online survey tools, but with the number of free and open source survey applications, that should not be as much of a concern. What should be at the forefront of your scrutiny is whether or not the online survey software will do what you need it to do.

When looking at online survey tools, there are a few questions that you should have answered.

  1. Is there a limit on the number of responses or questions? Survey software tools are sometimes purchased on a subscription that allows for a set number of questions or respondents. Make sure that your needs are met if this is the case with your survey software.
  2. Will your survey present different questions based on previous answers? Basic survey software will only allow you to enter questions and responses. If you want questions asked based on the responses of a user then you need to make sure that the online survey software you are using can handle this.
  3. What type of reporting is available? This is the most important factor. Its great if you run a survey online but if you can’t get the reports you need from it then your survey isn’t serving its purpose.
