Considerations when Using Email Surveys

March 10, 2011

Email has become an integral part of how people do business and email surveys have become a perfect way for marketing teams to collect data and opinions from their customers.

While using email surveys can be an essential tool for any marketing team, there are some things that need to be considered when dealing with survey design.

  • Use of sample representatives. When collecting email addresses marketers should consider how they will go about collecting information to make sure that that their pool is a good representative sample of the population in addition to targeting their specific demographics.
  • Data analysis. While surveys are a great way to collect data the anonymity that goes along with a survey often makes it difficult to tell what demographic the respondent comes from without taking the time to match email addresses with the demographic information provided.
  • Confidentiality. Like with any data collection, responses and participants should be kept confidential and private. Security measures need to be in place when it comes to email survey software and data storage that prevent the theft of this information.
  • Validity. Due to confidentiality respondents may not take as much care when filling out their responses. Considerations need to be made that address data that may not be completely accurate.
