Even if you have the best, most desirable or useful product in the world, you won't make many sales with lackluster or boring email. But you don't have to be a top-notch copywriter to capture the attention of subscribers. When writing your next mass email, follow these simple rules to create brighter, punchier and better selling copy.
Entice Subscribers
Grab the attention of subscriber's early using clever, creative words or interesting information that is simple to understand. There are a few ways to approach this:
- Start your email with a question: 'Hey, did you know you can look younger and feel better today following these easy tips?' Engaging subscribers from the beginning compels them to continue reading because they want to know the answer.
- State an unusual fact that pertains to your product or service to peak reader interest.
- Offer a free sample, free tips, or free trial to subscribers but don't tell them how to get the free sample until the middle or end of your email.
Practice by writing several openings until you find an approach that you feel comfortable using.
Make Your Product or Service Irresistible
Make your product or service irresistible by describing its benefits, unique features or provide valuable information subscribers can use to solve a problem or issue. Most people sign-up to receive email because they are interested in learning more about particular goods and services or they want information about problems or issues they are experiencing (your product or service provides an answer or solution).
Build trust by providing accurate information that is easy to understand. Avoid clever statements, humor (unless appropriate), puns, cute phrases or slang here. This is the place where you make subscribers believe they cannot live without your product or service.
Call to Action
The last section of your bulk emails should contain a call to action. This is where you reveal how subscribers can receive a free sample or trial, how to place an order or how to get an additional discount.
Your call to action doesn't have to be long, but it should be easy to understand and create a sense of urgency that encourages people to take action now. You can achieve this by putting a time limit to receive the free sample or trial.
What to Avoid...
What you leave out when writing high volume email is just as important as what you include. To maintain an authoritative and professional tone, avoid:
- Run-on sentences
- Flowery language
- Misinformation
- Flashy graphics
- Unreadable or difficult to read fonts
- Offers or promises you can't keep
- Offensive language (slang terms, bad humor, etc.)
Creating compelling email messages takes time and effort on your part, but it could mean the difference between ten sales and ten thousand sales!
