Successful SMS marketing is completely dependent upon your ability to express what you want to say in the fewest amount of words possible. Sure, mobile marketing software will help keep you in line to make sure your messages don’t exceed 160 characters – but it can’t get creative for you. This one’s on you. Here are a few tips to help you out.

  • Have a clear message. Know why you’re messaging your followers. If you don’t know why and are just doing it because it’s been too long since the last one, get back to the drawing board first.
  • Be economical with your words. This means not to use words that are too gargantuan – like that word – but just because you break it down doesn’t mean you’ll nail it. That’s just a part of it.
  • Use the headline approach. Pretend you’re writing a headline for a major newspaper. Forget the Twitter influence; that’s too long. SMS marketing thrives on brevity. Be brief, but don’t sacrifice your readers who fail to understand what you’re conveying.
  • Don’t talk down to your readers. Yes, you want to be brief but you don’t want to make it sound as if you think they’re cavemen. A bad example of a caveman SMS marketing might read: “Sale 2day. Buy shoe cheap.” Communicate, don’t offend.
  • Get help. Not everyone’s a born writer. If you’re lousy at it, find someone who’s less lousy and have them help you out. Use examples as provided by your mobile marketing software program to help you create the best text marketing messages.
