Recovering From an Epic Blunder via Mass Email Marketing Channels

November 06, 2011

The beauty of bulk email marketing solutions is that they can facilitate a quick and easy method of communicating with thousands of people (and if you’re really lucky, tens of thousands of people) on your bulk email list. But, ironically enough, that ease of communication is also something that can put your relationships with your customer base at risk, especially if you’re prone to certain accidents of lousy grammar, bad spelling or poor judgment.

This isn’t any reason not to use bulk email marketing solutions. Let’s face it, without it you’d just be sending off those embarrassing and potentially business-damaging messages far slower and with a lot more labor behind your efforts, but it wouldn’t change matters at all. The real question is, how do you handle a gaffe of epic proportions if you discover you’ve sent an embarrassing mass email message that you can’t call back?

The answer is: own up to your mistake. If we’re talking about a minor spelling goof, you can point it out in a self-deprecating but joking manner. You might even be able to get away with ignoring it, unless you massacred someone’s name. But, if the mistake is factual, or results in a seriously embarrassing circumstance, do your mea culpas as soon as possible. The biggest mistake that you can make is to curl into a ball and hope that nobody noticed it or to wait.

Don’t limit your apologies to the recipients in your bulk email list, either. Use your social media profiles to perform immediate damage control, and be willing to do whatever it takes to rectify a situation. This is the kind of response that people appreciate, and although it’s entirely possible you may lose a few customers here and there from a major blunder, the majority of your followers will be forgiving.
