Bulk email blasting has proven itself over the years as an effective means of getting the word out about a company’s products and driving sales. However, its very effectiveness has increased the competition in this niche, as more and more firms use email marketing as part of their outreach strategies. As a result, to improve the chances of having your emails read it has become increasingly important to design interesting subject lines. Given that your subject line will determine, to a large degree, whether your emails get opened, it makes sense to expend some effort determining which methods work best when it comes to writing compelling subject lines. Some tips for doing so are listed below.
1) Don’t be vague. Instead of enticing recipients of your emails, this is more likely to irritate them. “Read On For Information About Great Deals” is too vague to do much good, while a subject line such as “Steep Discounts on Children’s Pants and Shirts” is much more informative and likely to attract interest.
2) Leave them wanting to know more. 50 characters is not enough space to get your whole point across, so make sure that while your subject line isn’t excessively vague, it still manages to attract your recipients’ attention. Create interest and excitement by your use of language.
3) Don’t be afraid to use personalization. A subject line that includes the first name of your recipients can help engage their interest and improve your open rate, depending on the type of product or service you are selling.
4) Test a variety of subject lines. Given how important the subject line is to the success of a campaign, it can be a good idea to use your email blasting software to try a few different iterations of your subject line in a test campaign. You can then use the results of your test group of emails to determine which subject line or lines works best.
5) Use words that are designed to get a reaction. Depending on the product you are marketing, using words that typically drive the actions of consumers can be effective. Words like discount, sale, free, bonus, etc., if appropriate to your campaign, are generally effective ways to generate interest among consumers in the products you are marketing.
Monitor the competition. Check out what other companies in your field are using for subject lines. This can provide inspiration when it comes to designing your own subject lines for your mass e-mailing efforts. Advertising campaigns, whether on television or some other medium, can also be a good source of compelling verbiage for your subject lines
