How to Avoid Ruffling Feathers in Your Email Marketing Campaign

October 31, 2011

But, there’s one thing that online bulk email software can’t do for email marketers, and that’s avoid communication errors that have the potential of seriously ruffling feathers and getting people in a general tizzy.

This is where ensuring a good command of the English language, and spelling and grammatical skills come strongly into play. Consider the two distinctly different meanings of the following sentences:

• Let’s eat, people!
• Let’s eat people!

In this case, the presence of a single comma is enough to delineate between a call to chow down and a call for cannibalistic activity. Of course, there’s probably never going to come a time that you’ll use a sentence like that when operating an email marketing campaign, but you get the gist.

Unfortunately, using a spell check program wouldn’t be enough to catch an error as grave as the example above, which emphasizes the critical importance of proofreading your marketing messages several times prior to firing them off using your email tool. Once it’s gone, you can’t call a message back. And, once a mistake of possibly significant magnitude is made, there’s little you can do to make it “unhappen.”
