Creating an Effective Email Series

April 22, 2012

An email series typically includes three to five email messages that have the same theme or topic. You can use this type of marketing to educate, inform, and sell products to subscribers. An effective email series provides valuable information subscribers can use at any time.

Email content may include email tutorials, video demonstrations, eCourses, or a series of presentations (video, slide show, or written content).

Choosing a Topic

You can choose whatever topic you want to build an email series. If unsure about the topic, ask subscribers what they want to know more about. Send a quick survey and build a series around the suggestions you receive. You can also find great ideas by:

· Visiting social media pages pertaining to your niche market (your own pages or other people's)

· Visiting online forums to read questions left by subscribers and others in your niche market

· Read eBooks and other information to find suitable topics to peak subscriber interest

· Talk with other marketers and small business owners

Once you find a topic, start researching information to put in your series.

Developing an Email series

Gather the information you want to present. Create an outline that walks subscribers through the information in a logical way (remember, you're going to only send one or two messages a week). Divide information into three to five parts (increase this number if you have a lot of information, but try not to exceed seven parts as this will become frustrating to subscribers).

Each mass email message should contain one part of the series. Write out each part now or create parts as you send to subscribers – it's up to you. Just remember to continue each new part where you left off.

Sending Information to Subscribers

Send a short message prior to starting the series explaining to subscribers what they're about to receive. If you created the entire series already, use autoresponder settings to send each part to subscribers. If creating the series as you go, send a different part at the same time (once or twice a week in the morning or evening, for example). Continue until subscribers receive the entire series.

In addition to sending the series to existing subscribers, use this information to get people to sign up for your mailing list. Describe the series on your landing page and use autosponder settings to start sending each time a new subscriber is added to your list.
