The Truth About Bulk Email Lists

December 27, 2010

Bulk email lists are intriguing to many people trying to spread the word about their company. Whether they are marketing products or services, the thought of streamlining the process with a readymade bulk email list is a smart move to make. Blinded by the idea that they are working smarter, people often don’t see the negative aspects of working from these lists.

Issue 1 – Certified Email Addresses
One of the “bad” things about bulk email lists is determining if the addresses are any good. Buying a list of 5000 email addresses makes it look like you are reaching a good number of prospects but if your email deliverability rate shows that only 10 percent of them reached actual inboxes then you are paying for a small return.

Issue 2 – Opt-in Trickery
Most lists for sale advertise that they are opt-in lists. Usually this means that somewhere in the fine print an unsuspecting person signed up for something and now they are receiving a ton of emails as a result. This hurts because it not only makes you look like a spammer but you are wasting time and money sending emails to people who are just deleting them.

Issue 3 – List Fatigue
If you are under the impression that you are buying a fresh, targeted bulk email list then you are mistaken. These lists have usually been sold over and over again. When it comes to email deliverability and open rates, lists that are fatigued often fail to deliver in either category.

And the good?

The good news is that if you really spend time, and money, on finding the right bulk email list you could come away with a gem. Researching the company you are buying from and asking the right questions can separate the chaff from the wheat.
