The Pros and Cons of Online vs. Computer Based List Management Software

November 24, 2010

Email list management is a fancy way of describing the means by which a company builds up and maintains its list of contacts. A company will invest in list management software to ensure it’s able to keep up with the demands of a rapidly growing email contact list—the opt-in handlings, the bouncebacks, and the unsubscribe requests. There are two types of contact management software: web based and computer based. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages.

  • Web based software programs allow for the possibility of remote email list management. Computer based programs are restricted to those systems where software has been installed. Business operations that are run out of a single location may prefer computer based software. But if you’re interested in managing a small mailing list from various locations, web based is the way to go.
  • Online contact management programs support fully automated online subscribe and unsubscribe requests, and can drive users to a specific url where their requests are automatically processed. This eliminates the need for your customer to send an email request, and also eliminates the additional time your company will spend retrieving and processing unsubscribe requests.

Since law states that all unsubscribe requests have to be processed within 10 days, web based list management software may be the obvious choice for any company that experiences high mailing list turnover, or that may have difficulty expediting the requests within the given timeframe.
