Forming an Email Marketing Strategy

April 28, 2013

We get it – not all of you are professional email marketers who read the top marketing blogs every morning. Most of us are business owners, or division managers, or even entry-level marketers who just need a quick course into how to send a bulk email or two. Relax, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s a quick guide on how to get your email marketing strategy up and running...

1. Invest in sender software – This can be any bulk mailing tool, and there are plenty out there. Just make sure you’ve picked one that you know well and that serves your needs. Some cost money, some are free. Do you need the extra horsepower that a costly program might provide? Or do you just need to send an autoresponder message out once in a while? Starting with free software is usually a good choice, as you can upgrade to the professional stuff if you find yourself running out of options with you free software.

2. Make email a prominent part of your site – You need to get permission to send people mass emails, so make it easy for them to sign up once they get to your site. Non-invasive pop-ups work well, as does a “sign up” function that precedes any content on the page. Just make sure you actually get permission before you start sending people a bunch of email. Most people would call that kind of thing spam.

3. Diversify your content – Newsletters are great, but branching into educational graphics, videos, or articles can help drive interest and sales on your site.

4. Segment and test your email list – Break you list into groups (Men/Women for example) to see which kinds of emails work with which groups. You’d be surprise how much better your results will be if you just tailor them to recipient groups.
