3 Ways to Use Coupons Effectively in Email Marketing Campaigns

March 04, 2012

When people think of coupons, they typically think of tiny pieces of paper they receive in the mail or with their newspaper that promote savings on a particular product or service. But did you know you can offer coupons online? Learn how to use coupons effectively to increase sales and create a loyal customer base.

Drive Traffic to Your Website

Include a coupon with code in your next mass email to drive additional traffic to your website. You do not have to spend time creating a coupon (although there are plenty of email templates available if you want to do so), all you have to do is include information about the terrific savings opportunity you're presenting and include a code that subscribers can use on your website.

Create coupons for specific products or for a small discount off the subscriber's next purchase (10%-15%). Send coupons any time during the year or send for specific reasons such as:

  • Subscriber's birthday or to commemorate a public holiday or event
  • Reward for making multiple purchases
  • Entice subscriber's to make their first purchase
  • When you need to unload old inventory
  • Commemorate your business' anniversary, 100 millionth sale, or to introduce a new product

Increase traffic to your website to increase sales and encourage repeat business.

Reward Frequent Purchasers

Reward those who purchase items from your site often with a special coupon. In your email message, point out how special the subscriber is to your business and congratulate them for being a loyal customer. Not only will customers feel special, they will also make an additional purchase.

You can also reward those who make multiple purchases within a month or those who buy a certain amount.

Reward Referrals

Start a referrals reward program to encourage subscribers to pass your bulk emails along to family, friends and others. Assign subscribers a unique referral code embedded in a link to your landing page. To earn a reward, encourage subscribers to pass along the email with instructions that their friends, family and others have to use that link so the subscriber can get credit for the referral. Track the number of referrals and send out reward coupons when subscribers reach a specific number of referrals.
